Understanding the Family Vistas® Model: A Trauma-Informed Approach to Therapeutic Foster Care
When a child enters foster care, they may be carrying experiences that are difficult to understand and even harder to express. Abuse, neglect, separation from family, witnessing violence and the transition into foster care can all have an impact on a child’s emotional and behavioral well-being.
That’s why therapeutic foster care is about more than providing a safe place to live. Children need stability, nurturing relationships and individualized support to help them heal, build skills and move toward a positive future.
At Mentor Foster Care, our therapeutic foster care program is based on our clinical model, Family Vistas® which recognizes that every child is walking their own path, with a unique vision for their lives.
What Is the Family Vistas® Model?
The Family Vistas® model recognizes that every child has their own experiences, strengths, needs and vision for their future.
The model is based on the understanding that a child’s behavior can be a way of communicating emotions and experiences. It also recognizes that positive relationships are an important part of helping children heal, grow and build a positive future. Rather than focusing only on challenging behaviors, the treatment team works to understand the child’s experiences and help them develop healthier ways to cope, communicate and build relationships.
The goal is to help each child develop a positive direction for their life while receiving the individualized support they need along the way.
Relationships Are at the Heart of Healing
The Family Vistas® model takes an expanded view of what family can mean.
For one child, family may include biological parents and siblings. For another, it may include grandparents, foster parents, teachers or other important adults. The model recognizes that a child’s larger community—including their school or other supportive partners—can also play an important role.
The focus is on helping children develop nurturing relationships that can support healing and growth.
Foster parents, who we call Mentors or Host Home Providers, are an important part of that process. They provide a safe, nurturing home while working alongside the child’s treatment team to support their individual needs and goals.
A Team Approach to Supporting Each Child
Under the Family Vistas® model, each child is supported by a dedicated team of trained clinicians. The clinician coordinates treatment, conducts home visits and helps ensure the child receives the services and support needed to be successful.
The team begins by assessing the child’s individual needs and strengths. A comprehensive diagnostic assessment help inform an individualized treatment plan.
Services may include individual therapy, individualized skill-building activities, Creating Life Books and 24/7/365 on-call support.
Mentors also complete the RELATE skill development course, which helps them understand the special needs of children who have experienced trauma.
Building Skills and Strengthening Family Relationships
The Family Vistas® model recognizes that positive relationships are an important part of a child’s development and healing.
Foster parents and treatment teams work with children to develop nurturing relationships within their foster family and, when appropriate, with their family of origin or other caregivers.
The model uses evidence-based and evidence-informed approaches that may include:
- Motivational Interviewing to help children and families envision a positive future and develop their own motivation for change.
- Skill Building to help children in care develop skills related to their treatment goals, such as social skills.
- Intensive Case Management to help ensure necessary services and supports are in place.
- Shared Parenting to actively support the importance of family in children’s lives and involve a child’s family of origin when possible.
Together, these approaches help children build skills, strengthen relationships and develop a greater sense of emotional safety and support.
Assessing Each Child’s Needs and Strengths
Every child’s needs are different, which is why individualized care is an important part of the Family Vistas® model.
Through clinical assessments and ongoing evaluation, the treatment team (including the foster parent) develops a plan based on the child’s individual strengths, needs, and goals, which guides the team in providing appropriate services and support.
Working Toward Permanency
Therapeutic foster care is designed to help children make progress toward a safe and stable future.
For some children, the goal may be reunification with their family of origin. For others, permanency may mean adoption by their foster parent or another family. Young people over age 18 may transition to independent living.
The Family Vistas® model keeps the child’s permanency goal in focus throughout the process, helping the child and their support system build the skills and relationships needed to move toward that goal.
A Focus on Quality
Quality is an important part of the Family Vistas® model. Services are overseen by a clinical team to help ensure that care is effective and builds on each child’s natural strengths and abilities. Regular quality improvement audits help ensure services meet state and national requirements.
Helping Children Heal, Grow and Move Forward
The Family Vistas® model recognizes that children who have experienced trauma need more than a safe home. They need caring relationships, individualized support and the opportunity to develop skills that can help them navigate their experiences and build a positive future.
Through therapeutic foster care, foster parents and treatment teams work together to surround children with the support they need to heal, strengthen relationships and work toward permanency.
Because children belong in families, the Family Vistas® model is designed to help children find stability, build connections and move toward a positive life direction.
