Foster parents provide more than a home—they offer stability, love, and the foundation children need to heal, grow, and thrive in their communities.
Every May, we honor National Foster Care Month. This is a time to thank the caring people who open their hearts and homes to children who need help. It started as a small community effort and grew into a national event. The goal was to help more people learn about foster care and to celebrate foster parents, social workers, and advocates who make a difference.
National Foster Care Month does many important things. It helps people learn about the many children in foster care in the United States. It also teaches communities why foster parents matter and encourages more families to learn about fostering. During May, agencies and communities come together to hold events, share stories, and thank the people who give children safe and caring homes. To learn more, read The Importance of National Foster Care Month.
Foster parents are more than temporary caregivers. They are caring adults who help children feel safe, loved, and supported. Many children come into foster care feeling scared, unsure, or hurt. Foster parents give them comfort and support so they can begin to heal, trust others, and feel safe again.
Foster parents do much more than meet daily needs. They help children heal and grow by giving them:
Children in stable, supportive foster homes often do better emotionally, socially, and in school.
Mentor Foster Care gives foster parents the tools, support, and guidance they need to care for children with confidence and kindness.
Every foster care journey is a story of hope and change. These stories show why foster parents matter so much. Each child’s story is different, but one thing stays the same: caring foster parents can make a big difference.
A child may come into a foster home feeling quiet, scared, and unsure. Over time, with patience and care, that child may begin to open up and trust again. A teenager may feel like their future is limited, but with support and encouragement, they may discover new strengths and new goals. These changes take time. They happen because foster parents keep showing up, offering support, and believing in the children in their care.
Foster parents also help siblings stay connected, support family relationships when it is safe and helpful, and speak up for each child’s needs. They make sure children are cared for at home, at school, and in their communities.
As we celebrate National Foster Care Month, we want to say thank you to all our Mentor foster parents. Your care, kindness, and commitment make a big difference. You open your hearts and homes to children who need safety, love, and support. You do more than give them a place to stay. You help them heal, grow, and see their own strengths.
Your patience during hard times, your support for each child’s needs, and your joy in every small success all matter. You help children feel loved, valued, and hopeful about the future. The care and memories you give them can last a lifetime.
Thank you for opening your homes and hearts and for making our communities stronger and more caring. During National Foster Care Month and every month, we celebrate you.
