Taking the first step toward becoming a foster parent can feel overwhelming, but understanding what happens during your initial call and application process can help you move forward with confidence and clarity.

Taking the first step toward becoming a foster parent can feel overwhelming, but understanding what happens during your initial call and application process can help you move forward with confidence and clarity.

Introduction to Our Milestone Series

Becoming a Mentor foster parent is one of the most meaningful decisions you'll ever make. Throughout this blog series, we'll walk with you through each milestone of the foster parent certification process, breaking down what might seem complex into clear, manageable steps. Our goal is to help you navigate this journey with confidence, knowing exactly what to expect at every turn.

Today, we're starting at the very beginning—that first phone call and the application process. These initial steps are the foundation of your foster care journey, and understanding them will help you move forward feeling informed, prepared, and supported.

Your First Conversation With Our Team

The journey to becoming a foster parent often begins with a simple inquiry. Once you complete the initial form, your information is received by our team, and the process officially begins. Within 48 hours, a member of our recruitment team will reach out to you through text or email to setup the initial call. This initial outreach is designed to be timely, welcoming, and informative. Our goal is to ensure you feel acknowledged, supported, and confident as you explore foster care.

During this call, our team will introduce you to our Mentor Foster Care program and explain how we support foster parents—referred to as Mentors in our program. We will also discuss the children and youth we serve, review the basic requirements to become a Mentor foster parent, and provide an overview of eligibility criteria along with a high-level explanation of the certification process.

We understand that every family’s circumstances, motivations, and schedules are different. That is why this conversation is tailored to your individual needs. Our team takes time to listen and answer your questions so you have a clear understanding of what lies ahead before moving forward.

Understanding the Foster Care Application Process

If you feel ready to proceed, the application process can begin right away. The application itself is comprehensive but straightforward, designed to gather essential information about you, your family, and your home environment. While the questions may seem detailed, each one serves an important purpose in ensuring the safety and well-being of the children placed in your care. In many cases, a member of our recruitment team can complete the application with you over the phone, making the process accessible and stress-free.

The application will ask for basic information such as your personal and household details, employment history, and references. You'll also be asked about your parenting philosophy, your experience with children, and your motivations for becoming a foster parent. This isn't about having perfect answers—it's about understanding who you are and how we can best support you in this role.

Moving Forward with Confidence After Your Application

Submitting your application is an exciting milestone, and it marks the beginning of a transformative journey. After your application is submitted, you will be connected with a local team member known as a Family Evaluation Specialist. This individual will guide you through each step of the certification process, providing ongoing support as you work toward becoming a Mentor foster parent.

As you await the completion of your certification process, take time to prepare emotionally and practically. Connect with other foster parents, continue learning about trauma-informed care, and discuss with your family how you'll adjust to having a child join your home. This preparation time is valuable and will help you feel ready when the moment comes to welcome a child into your home. Stay tuned for the next post in our series, where we'll dive into the first home visit.
