Five Way Host Homes Support Independence and Personal Growth

If you’ve still thinking about becoming a Mentor with Sevita Host Home, this post is for you.

If you’ve still thinking about becoming a Mentor with Sevita Host Home, this post is for you.

Independence looks different for everyone — and in Sevita’s Host Home program, it’s defined by the goals, strengths, and dreams of each individual.

We call our caring host homes providers Mentors. Mentors personalize support that empowers adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities to grow at their own pace, while staying connected to their community. Here are five meaningful ways Mentors support independence every day.

1. Building Life Skills

From budgeting and meal planning to using public transportation, host homes help individuals develop everyday skills that support independence and confidence.

2. Encouraging Personal Goals

Whether someone wants to explore employment, volunteer opportunities, or learn new hobbies, Mentors provide encouragement and guidance to help individuals pursue what matters most to them.

3. Creating Strong Routines

Consistent routines help build stability and confidence. In a host home, daily rhythms are shaped around the individual’s needs, preferences, and lifestyle.

4. Supporting Community Connections

Mentors encourage individuals to stay active in their communities — attending events, forming friendships, and participating in activities that foster belonging.

5. Providing Support That Adapts Over Time

As goals evolve, so does support. Host homes are flexible, allowing individuals to grow while still receiving the right level of assistance along the way.

At Sevita, independence isn’t about doing everything alone — it’s about having the right support to live a full, self-directed life.

Depending on the state, you may hear different terms for Host Home services. While the titles vary, each one reflects the same core idea: safe, supportive living in a family environment. Alabama, Arizona, Colorado, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Minnesota, Missouri, and Texas all use the name Host Home. Other states use a different name:

    • California: Family Home Agency
    • Kentucky: Family Homes
    • Massachusetts: Adult Foster Care Provider
    • Nevada: Shared Living
    • New Mexico: Family Living Supports
    • Ohio: Shared Living
    • Pennsylvania: Life Sharing Provider
    • Tennessee: Family Model Homes
    • Virginia: Sponsored Home Provider

If you’d like to learn more about becoming a Mentor in your area, we’d love to connect with you.

Mentors received a monthly stipend to help cover the cost of care.
