You Must Be at Least 21 Years Old

To become a Mentor foster parent in Ohio, applicants must be 21 years of age or older.

You don’t.

Your home study isn’t about judging your decorating style or expecting your home to be perfect. It’s a chance for us to get to know your family, answer your questions and make sure your home meets Mentor’s certification requirements.

Your home will also need to have enough space for each child in care to have their own permanent, clean bed and adequate room for their personal belongings. Sleeping arrangements for a child in care cannot displace anyone already living in the home from their own bed or bedroom, and common living spaces cannot be used as sleeping areas. 

You Need Enough Income to Support Your Household

Another common misconception is that foster parents need to be wealthy.

That's not true.

You simply need to demonstrate that you're financially stable and able to meet your household's expenses before welcoming a child into your home.

Foster parents receive a monthly stipend to help cover the costs of caring for a child, but those funds are intended to support the child's needs—not replace your household income.

Your Household Matters Too

If you're married or living with a partner, your spouse or live-in partner must also participate in the foster care certification process.

Additionally, everyone in your household who is 18 or older will need to complete the required background checks as part of the certification process.
