You Are Welcome Here: Celebrating Pride Month in Foster Care
At Mentor Foster Care, a part of the Sevita family, we believe all children deserve to lead full, joyful lives and to have caring people supporting them as they grow. Pride Month is an opportunity to celebrate the strength, resilience, and diversity of the LGBTQ+ community while also recognizing the importance of creating safe, affirming spaces for children and teens in foster care.
Children enter foster care from all different backgrounds and experiences. Some identify as LGBTQ+, while others may still be discovering who they are. What every child deserves is the same: to feel accepted, respected, supported, and loved for exactly who they are.
We are proud to welcome individuals from all walks of life and backgrounds. Diversity within foster care matters because children benefit from seeing themselves reflected in the caring adults around them and from being part of communities where they feel they belong.
Why Inclusion Matters in Foster Care
LGBTQ+ youth are disproportionately represented in foster care and often face additional challenges related to identity, acceptance, and stability. Having supportive adults can make a lasting difference in a young person’s life.
Supportive foster homes can help children and teens:
• Feel safe expressing who they are
• Build confidence and self worth
• Develop healthy relationships and trust
• Experience stability and belonging
• Know they are accepted without conditions
Every child deserves a home where they can be fully themselves.
Foster Care Needs Compassionate Foster Parents
There is no one “type” of person or family who can become a Mentor foster parent. People from many different backgrounds step into this role because they want to provide support, guidance, and care to children who need it most.
Mentor foster parents can include:
• Married couples
• Single adults
• LGBTQ+ individuals and couples
• Parents and non parents
• Individuals with unique life experiences and perspectives
What matters most is a willingness to provide a safe, stable, and caring environment for children and teens.
Creating Affirming Spaces for Youth
Small actions can have a meaningful impact on a child’s sense of safety and belonging. Affirming environments often include:
• Listening without judgment
• Respecting a child’s identity and experiences
• Using inclusive language
• Encouraging open communication
• Helping youth feel seen, valued, and supported
For many children in foster care, knowing there is at least one adult who accepts and supports them can change the trajectory of their future.
This Pride Month and Beyond
Pride Month is a celebration, but it is also a reminder of the importance of community, inclusion, and compassion. We are grateful for the Mentors, families, advocates, and supporters who help create welcoming spaces for children every day of the year.
Together, we can continue building a foster care community where every child feels safe, respected, and empowered to thrive.
