If you’re still thinking about becoming a Mentor with Sevita Host Home, this post is for you.
A house is made of walls, windows, and a roof. A home is something much more. It is the feeling of belonging, comfort, and connection that turns a place into somewhere you truly want to be.
For individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities and other challenges, having a home that feels welcoming, supportive, and personal can make a meaningful difference in their quality of life. In Sevita's Host Home program, we believe everyone deserves a place where they feel valued, respected, and included.
Home Is About Relationships
One of the biggest things that makes a house feel like home is the people in it.
Host Home Mentors open their homes and their hearts, creating opportunities for meaningful relationships to grow. Whether it's sharing meals, celebrating birthdays, watching a favorite TV show together, or simply talking about the day, these everyday moments help build trust and connection.
A strong support system can help people feel more confident, secure, and empowered to reach their goals.
A Place to Be Yourself
Home should be a place where people can relax and be themselves.
In a Host Home setting, individuals are encouraged to personalize their space, express their interests, and participate in decisions about their daily lives. From decorating a bedroom with favorite colors and photos to choosing activities and routines, these personal touches help create a sense of ownership and belonging.
When people feel comfortable being themselves, they are more likely to thrive.
Routines That Bring Comfort
Many people find comfort in familiar routines. Simple daily activities—morning coffee, family dinners, walks around the neighborhood, or game nights—can create a sense of stability and predictability.
Host Home Mentors work alongside the people they support to establish routines that reflect their preferences, goals, and lifestyle. These routines provide consistency while allowing room for growth and new experiences.
Being Part of a Community
Home extends beyond the front door.
Feeling connected to neighbors, local businesses, faith communities, volunteer opportunities, and recreational activities helps people build meaningful relationships and develop a sense of belonging. Whether attending community events, joining a club, participating in sports, or volunteering, community involvement creates opportunities for friendships and personal growth.
In Host Home, people are encouraged to stay active and engaged in the communities they call home.
Celebrating Everyday Moments
Sometimes it's the little things that make a house feel like home.
A favorite meal after a long day. Holiday traditions. Family game nights. Decorating for the seasons. Laughing together around the dinner table.
These moments create memories and strengthen relationships. They remind us that home is not just where we live—it's where we feel cared for, accepted, and connected.
Creating a Sense of Belonging
At its heart, home is about belonging.
It's knowing that your voice matters. It's having people who support your goals and celebrate your successes. It's feeling safe, respected, and valued for who you are.
Through our Host Home program, Mentors help create homes where people can build meaningful relationships, develop independence, and enjoy the comfort of being part of a family and community.
Because everyone deserves more than just a place to live—they deserve a place to call home.
