If you’re still thinking about becoming a Mentor with Sevita Host Home, this post is for you.
Summer time when we celebrate independence in many ways—and in a Sevita Host Home, it’s a meaningful opportunity to recognize the unique journeys of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). Independence looks different for everyone, and this month is a chance to honor the progress, choices, and personal achievements that make each story special.
In a Host Home setting, independence isn’t defined by doing everything alone. Instead, it’s about building the skills, confidence, and support systems that allow individuals to live as fully and self-directed as possible. It’s about having a voice in daily decisions, exploring personal interests, and growing at a pace that feels right for each person.
Empowering Everyday Choices
Independence often begins with small, everyday decisions. Choosing what to wear, what to eat, or how to spend free time may seem simple, but these moments build confidence and a sense of control. Mentors play an important role in encouraging individuals to express their preferences and take an active role in their routines.
Building Life Skills
From cooking meals to managing personal schedules, developing life skills is a key part of fostering independence. Consider small settings with achievable goals together—like learning a new recipe, practicing money skills, or helping plan a weekly activity. Each step forward helps strengthen self-reliance and pride.
Encouraging Community Engagement
Being part of the community is another important aspect of independence. Whether it’s attending local events, volunteering, or exploring new places, these experiences help individuals build social connections and navigate the world around them with greater confidence.
Celebrating Personal Milestones
Independence is a journey filled with milestones—some big, some small. This month, take time to recognize those moments. Maybe it’s trying something new, speaking up in a group, or mastering a daily task. Celebrating these achievements reinforces progress and encourages continued growth.
Supporting Independence with Care
True independence is supported independence. We call our caring providers Mentors. Mentors provide guidance, encouragement, and a safe environment where individuals can take steps forward while knowing they are supported. It’s a balance of offering help when needed and stepping back to allow growth.
As we celebrate independence each summer, we also celebrate individuality, resilience, and possibility. In Sevita Host Homes, every day is an opportunity to empower individuals to live with confidence and purpose. By honoring each person’s journey, we create a space where independence is not just celebrated—it’s lived.
